Interested in modeling but don’t have a clue on how to go about it? Fashion choreographer, event organizer and model groomer Shekhar Sable, who runs Fashion Code Academy and Events in Pune shares his tips. Shekhar has worked with the likes of designers like Rohit Bal, Arjun Khanna, Wendell Rodricks, Anita Dongre and Shaina NC apart from modeling industry stalwarts like Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, Malaika Arora, John Abraham, Bikram Saluja and more. Here are his guidelines.

Know your forte
Modeling can be of three types – ramp, still and advertising. Decide which one suits you the best and what is your forte. If you are looking to do ramp modeling, your height is important. A female model needs to be at least 5.7 feet tall while the man has to be at least 5.10 feet. Also, a toned body is a pre-requisite for ramp modeling.

Stay updated
It is important that a model is updated with the latest in fashion.

Therefore, watch related television shows or read fashion magazines like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle etc so that you are in touch with the trends in clothes, shoes, colors and accessories. Also, it is important to study facial expressions, postures and styles.

Self- grooming
Self grooming includes various aspects like fitness and diet, skin care, hair care and personality. It is very important for a model to be perfect in all these aspects and if these parameters are not met then modeling should not be chosen as a profession. The easier option is to join a grooming school which could help with all these factors.

It is important to have a sense of self-confidence and great body language which could help you conduct yourself in terms of talking and walking. Read good books and keep yourself well versed with what’s around you by keeping your eyes and ears alert at all times. Practice talking, walking and emoting in front of the mirror. Voice modulation is also necessary for every model especially if you are participating in contests.

Fitness plays a major role in the fashion industry. Toned bodies are essential, especially for ramps. The right diet and nutrition tips will help you lose/ gain weight and know your body type and metabolic activity. It will help to improve your body, skin and hair as well.

It is important to have the latest haircut that would suit your face type. Clean-ups, scrubs, massages, wraps and facials are helpful. Your face is your asset when it comes to advertising.

Portfolio
A great portfolio can help you get work in the modeling world. So get a good one done from a reputed studio. Practice expressions and discuss your look with the stylist and the photographer. An ideal portfolio can cost anywhere between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 50,000.

Money factor
Money should not be an issue when you have just entered modeling. Therefore avoid over demanding. More work will mean better visibility. Once work starts pouring in you can demand better compensation. So initially accept as many shows as possible.

Experience
The best way to gain experience is to initially try and appear in as many contests as possible. It is a great learning platform where you can undergo the grind of the grueling training sessions from experts. Easy introductions to fashion designers, choreographers, trainers and socialites can happen.

If you plan to go for still modeling auditions are the best way to learn. Be friendly to the production houses.

Mindset
The mindset of every ramp model should be that he/she is a mannequin and so the walk, style and behavior must be in sync with the fabric and the collection of the designer. In still modeling, build a rapport with the photographer and deliver as required. It is also important to add your own personal style which makes you distinct from others.

Socializing
In the fashion industry, visibility is extremely essential and therefore attending social dos is akin to an investment. Interacting with the right people is important.

Precautions
It is important to be wary of fake agencies and people making false promises as it may leave you disillusioned. Before signing any contracts find as much info as you can about the people you are dealing with.

So if you think modeling is the field for you, go ahead and strike the right pose!
